Wikis…(Weekly Blog 9-25-09)

During this week we learned how to use a wiki. We contributed to a wiki about a genre of music. Each person in the group contributed some to the document and put in their own stuff. It worked very well while we worked and there were very few glitches. The only bad thing was that only one person was allowed to edit it at once. However you probably wouldn’t really have this problem when people aer working on their own time and not all at once, like we were in the classroom.

I can definitely see myself using wiki in the future. Especially when I’m usually the one that gets stuck doing the work, when I’m not in a group with my friends. Using wiki on group projects will be really nice, if my other group members have an account with google. It will make it easier for everyone to contribute in a group project, and if the teacher knows about google too they can see who has done work.

New Laptops Coming This Season

With the holiday season coming soon companies are starting to bring out their new designs. On tech.yahoo.com an article by Gabriel Madway talks about the new labs. She explains the difference between old laptops and these new laptops that are coming out. Laptops have come a long way in a decade. They used to be black and grey. Most were bulky and bigger than our PCs now. There are so many new cool designs coming.

The look of laptops has come a long way. This season they are nicer and thinner than ever. The new laptops have many different colors you can choose from. Not only are there colors but also designs on the laptops. They have designs like swirls and flowers on the cover of laptops. Now you can get a laptop that fits your personality!

The New IPod Nano!

I was reading an article from gadget wise, and found that Apple is getting ready to release a new Ipod Nano. It’s shaped like a rectangle with rounded curves and looks really sleek. I think it will sell really well not only because of the way it looks, but also because of the new features that they have added to the Nano. The new Nano has an FM radio, a built-in camera, and a speaker in the Ipod. The price will start from $150 and go up from there with the amount of memory.

These new features will really help the Ipods sell and help apple gain new customers. I know several people who have MP3 players and they won’t get an Ipod because their MP3 has radio. Apple benefits from the radio because any time you here a song an option comes up that you can chose to buy a song. I have an Ipod touch that has a built-in speaker and I love it for when I don’t have ear phones and other people will too. Also having a camera in it will only help the Nano’s cause.!

Plagiarism and Good Websites (Weekly Blog)

What makes a good website? I honestly don’t think about how truthful, knowledgeable, and informational a website might be enough. There are several things I could think about when looking at a site to test the value of it. One of the first would be easy enough, to look at how correct the grammar, punctuation, and spelling is on the site. A person who wanted to be professional and provide correct information would work hard to make sure their article looked professional. Another way to test the value and credentials of an article online is to look at who the author is. Look at other articles that they write, and their credentials. The only other big thing I can think about to test how good a site is right now is to look at the resources for the article. If they have a variety of resources and look like they have a good amount of research then the site is probably a reliable one.

Plagiarism and academic dishonesty is when students or people in general take another persons work and try to pass their work as their own. plagiarism can be intentional and unintentional. I think plagiarizing is wrong and it should be punished when it happens. although I do feel bad for the people who plagiarise unintentionally. I don’t think plagiarizing is ok at any time. I think the people who plagiarise are the people who get caught up in doing stuff other than their papers or are too lazy to do them. I believe that this is as bad as people make it out to be, should be punished, and is never ok. Teachers and other administrators can’t tell the difference between intentional and unintentional plagiarising so students just need to be very careful!

Modal Windows

I never really knew what the name was for the boxes on you computer screen that pop up above the rest of the display. Usually they are from programs on your computer and require you to either click yes, no, or cancel, for them to go away. These type of displays are called modal windows. Most recently they have been seen on web pages. There are many uses for them, and they don’t always have to be the annoying display that stays there till you click on something. They are actually very useful!

Modals have been showing up on internet pages more and more. There are many different uses for them including pictures, videos, advertising, alerts, and tools. Instead of cluttering up a page with pictures, you can make a slide show in the modal of your pictures, or have little miniatures of the pictures that you can click on to show up bigger in the modal. A modal would be a perfect place to put tools for your web sites too. It would be easy and accessible. I really like the idea of internet sites using Modals more.

Web Design 2

For our weekly blog this week we are to write about our Web Design class again. I am still really enjoying this class. This week we mainly worked on the basics of HTML. Through HTML you make web sites, so we just learned the basics. Learning this stuff excites me, because I know I’ll be able to use this knowledge about web sites in the future, and not just in college.

We learned how to do just the basics of a web page and not all the technical stuff. The first code we learned was , so that the code is understood. Then we learned how to create the titles on tabs with the codes and . Then we learned how to make text appear on the page by the codes <body>. The next day after we learned theses codes we learned some other pretty basic codes. These codes were codes used for bolding, font size, text color, skipping lines, and the color of your backgrounds. One I’m really excited about is the account on Google we created, that lets us use Google Reader. I had never used a Google Reader before, and I really like it. An RSS is a web page where you can get feeds from your favorite sites directly to your RSS page. So you can get your favorite articles from many of your favorite web sites all on one page! Using a reader saves a lot of time, because you get exactly what you want without having to search for it.</p> <p>Google reader and other RSS programs are really easy to use! Once you set up your account with a RSS you go to your favorite web sites and get feeds from the web sites. You so this by going to the site and clicking the orange icon button that represents the RSS feeds. Also some sites have a button that says google reader that you can click on to add the feeds. The one thing I really think makes Google Reader even better is that you can get feeds for certain stories on sites. I’m in a web design class and so far I think it’s pretty amazing. It’s probably my favorite class so far this year. One of the reasons is because a lot of my friends are in this class so it’s fun. Although sometimes I do get a little frustrated with the computer and yell at it. =)</p> <p>I really liked creating this blog. It is a little frustrating though to try to learn how to use a new website. I get confused because of all the different ways that you are able to do the same thing on here. One of the articles was about how soon on youtube you will be able to rent movies. The article was by Yinka Adegoke and Alexei Oreskovic and it was in the Washington Post. You will be able to rent movies for 3.99 or so from certain movie companies who make a deal with youtube. I think that this is a really good idea for youtube. I know that, as for myself, I would rent movies from youtube, just because of how accessible it is. It would seem so much easier to go to youtube and get a movie there then deal with the other sites that I am unfamiliar with, like Amazon and Netflix.</p> <p>One of the big reasons youtube has decided to try to go on this venture with movies is obviously to make more money. Not only will they get more money from users paying for movies, but also from advertising. Companies are more willing to pay for advertising at the beginning of professionally made movies then they are for videos made just for fun. Also you would think that this added aspect to youtube would definitely bring in more users. Keywords are what make sites come up on search engines when people use word searches. Creating good keywords in your article will help your article to become more popular in several ways. Keywords will help you target the right audience and draw in other people who will be surfing the Internet.</p> <p>In the article she talks about looking at the competition and researching their keywords. By doing this you’ll be able to see what other keywords people in your niche are using. Then you’d get more people to look at your blog by adding these keywords to your own.
